With so many different backdrops to do I had to pay attention to the painting and tone to set the moods for the different scenes. In every one of the sets you see a light tone and the dark tone, but the middle tone make the other two shine.
This is from "Into the Woods" the story of what happen after "ever after".
I loved doing them and painting the sets as well as building them.
Lets get our brushes wet and find the middle tone.

Let the subject be the star not the sky. Then use a limited palette. I came across both ideas by studying the impressionist. They use these Ideas and more to bring new and interesting experiments forward breaking some old masters painting techniques.
No longer did the artist spend months doing glass like backgrounds. Nor did the artist spend hours and days with glazing of light or dark color. Instead an artist can do a painting in an hour or two, yes you can even spend days painting.
Okay let get our brushes wet and our sky calm.

Where is the fence going? Is there more over the hill? What part of the country are we? Is it in the west or the south?
How did we create the lay of the land? Are those marks the different rocks? Have fun with it. Remember the book "Highlights" tm. ? They always had a page with hidden items in it.

The more reference to the different trees and bushes I see and draw the better I can paint them.
Like anything else you do in life the more you know about it the better you can deal with it. I know the little birds beat me up a lot. I still try to sketch them even though I struggle with them.
Funny how somethings come so easy to us and other just kick us in the ditch.

This style of painting is post - Impressionist - homemade dip and dash. Meaning I wanted to do a textured painting with the touches and dabs of color. Then I wanted washes with shadows and light.
Up close this painting is hard to see but as you move back you see it come together. Many if not all Impressionist do that with their paintings. Putting the colors that are complement and contrast side by side to make the painting.
Oh by the way Yesterday was a blast! Keep your brushes wet! Yee Haw!

I pray the weather holds out for us but the good book says it will rain on the just and unjust. So you all better get your slicker (raincoat) and saddlebags.
The weather man says it will hold till 3:30 pm so we will see. I know we have western games like rope the doggies. ( A saw horse with a stick horse head.) Trivia and more.
So keep your chaps dry and your brushes wet.
