Interest in the back

Every artist has his or her way of catching the background. As you may or may not know the background in any thing is so important. Look at movies, or family pictures. Even the show AFV has funny videos of people in the background.

Flowers can have a different background because of the interest in the leaves and blooms. You can do a plain or a mixed background but don't compete with the fore ground or subject.

In a landscape you will paint the sky or clouds then move forward into the other subjects. In a more floral painting you can do you complete under painting or background.
