Master the Rock

I have tried to  get rocks just right for a while. In this picture I feel I have hit the right mix of light and dark. By blending Dark or Burnt Sienna with Ultra Marine Blue and a little bit of white I can get a good gray.

I use this as my base color and put in a lot of brush strokes. I find the more I try to blend and smooth out the color the worse the picture is in my mind.

I love this part of the painting.  I hope you do too.
