Happy Holidays! Well kids by now you have your Tree up we put ours up a few days ago.
What does this have to do with art? Well look at the picture in the back ground. It says Joy, a friend of ours made it with her son ( the foot print is his). The  Idea to make reindeer is very cool and is a personal gift. We add it to our Christmas decor every year.

This is something we can do for our friends and loved ones, personal gifts that mean so much!
Plus it is fun to do. Last night I made a few thing for our family. Whew!

I understand that our German friends brought the tree in to the house for their celebration of the holidays.

The French say Noel, and we say Merry Christmas in the U.S.A. Everyone says something different for the Spirit of the "Holy Day".

But everyone needs to share with others God Bless you and yours!!!!

Keep painting!!!

Joy and Yule tide!

This last February in a snow storm we had two Cardinals, male and female, on our bird feeder. So I painted this tree and birds in the snow.

I like the background using a totally different color for the sky. It seems as if the red of the cardinal is stronger, and the light color of the female is bolder.

The snow in the tree limbs is also fun to do because I was able to add the shadows in the bottom and sides.

The use of complementary colors yellow and purple and orange and blues make the painting bright.

I love to see the birds in the winter at our feeders with the ladies moving the boys out to eat the grain first. Sometimes the fight get crazy. But that is the sparrows more so than the bigger birds.

Stay warm today kids.

Winter Cardinals

These birch are an experiment. Like Turner and Leonardo Da Vinci, well sorta like that. I wanted to do a watercolor with pen and ink to change up the look of the painting.

To me these trees say winter not necessarily Holiday Season. As a boy my Dad took me into the woods where he worked and I would see the Birch trees and snow. This is a memory of winter for me.

I used only a few colors Payne's Gray and Ultramarine Blue. Also a touch of Yellow Ocher.

The pens are the new style with a calligraphy nib. This adds a different dimension to the painting. That's is what we need to do add a different bit of depth in your work.

Well kids bundle up today more snow coming.

Winter is Here

Yesterday we had snow! About 3 inches of the awful stuff. When I was a younger person I loved the snow, it meant I could get out of school!  As I got older it was a way to make a dollar or two, shoveling out the sidewalks for neighbors.  Now I am an older man and snow is a pain in my neck and back and legs and...

But on the other side of the coin, look at all the pretty pictures I can paint the blue shadows and Birch trees. The Blue Spruce trees and Pines, so in that regard I like the snow ...Outside My Window!!!

This half sheet of a larger watercolor paper is Ideal for these quick sketches and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Oh look outside the rain has washed the snow away ... Thank you rain!

Snow and Blue Spruce

This Watercolor is a quick study about composition with trees and the cabin. I think about the time we stayed in Tennessee near Gatlinburg in a cabin like this. I know they just had a terrible forest fire with much destruction and loss of life.

But this was better times. The fall color, the birch trees, and the fence in the rise. With just a dash of color you can add depth or change the slope of the land. You can add different colors for a spring time scene or no color for winter plus the blues and grays for that cold feeling.

I am always amazed at what it takes to do one of these quick studies, sometimes I just start and in no time I have a piece done and ready to do another just as quick.

Well in the Northern part of the United States we have lots of snow and cold weather so I'll stay inside and paint the rest of the day.

Look for your little cabin to stay in especially if its cold outside.

Fall Cabin

This year my lovely wife and I celebrate 30 years of marriage.
Kathy is also going to have a birthday and we still have Christmas to deal with!

These roses are for love and happiness, Monet said,"Flowers are one of the main reasons I paint." Unlike Monet I paint to grow as a person, but I enjoy the recognition as well.

I have painted roses, poesy's, Daisy's, and that famous artist flower the mystery flower.

I like the layout of the rose on top, it is like a bell, every art book says to paint roses like a tea cup. Yes if you are painting the inside or a side view, but the Dark and Shadows are what strike me.

Try to discover a picture or a group of flowers for your holiday and later paint them. Its what it is all about.

Birthday and Christmas Rose

This picture has some color and contrast. Yellow against the white of the house with the green stems are good, but the grass and purple and pink is much brighter in the Spring.

So with my artistic licence I change the picture to purple flowers and a more gray house for my background.  Again as we have said before you can paint what you see or paint what you feel.

Edouard Manet said' " You think you are insulting me by saying I paint differently every time I pick up a brush, but I Thank you. That is what I want to do!"

Man, this makes me wish spring was here but I cannot rush the seasons. Yet 20 degrees Fahrenheit today and I am a little chilly. Snow flurries also in the air, Christmas is just around the corner.

I guess we need color and contrast!
