Well kiddies, we have 4 inches of snow and it's cold and blowing snow. I had planned to go to OSU this morning for an appointment.

No that was not to be so we will paint or draw and eat. I guess I shouldn't complain I have seen snow at Easter. Early next week it is suppose to be in the upper 50's that's good.

Mark Twain said, " Everyone talks about the weather but no one does anything about it." I say let's weather strip Canada!

I know the poor folks in New England are being hit with their fourth Winter storm. So it could be worse.

Okay what does this have to do with art? I don't know I guess you should go draw a snow flake. Draw a man shoveling snow. Draw me in the warm house!

Keep your brushes warm and shovel on!

2nd Day of Spring

Tuesday, March 20, 2018

I wish on the first day of spring it was warm and flowers were blooming. But look out the window, It's not warm nor flowers blooming.

Spring can be a fun thing to sketch with the trees just starting to bud. The days are getting longer and the sun is moving to the far east. This warms our half of the planet for over six months.

The plum tree in this picture is in full bloom so it must be early May.

A quick sketch of this for me would be the flower or bloom in the lower center. Scrub in the flower, then add the branches etc. then mottle the grasses.

Well gang lets party at 12:45 p.m. for spring and keep our brushes wet.

Here's a little copy of a painting I saw in Cincinnati. I added the tree on the right side as an eye stopper. Many paintings have this eye stopper like a tree or bush placed just right.

There are many ways to keep the viewers eyes in your paining and not wandering all over. I like the french drape or pulled back curtain. It is usually on the left side and is a huge tree or even a mountain side cut back like a letter C.

This painting is the old man going home after all day out with the  sheep. I can see he's weary after the full day of work the dog is bringing up the stray sheep.

Keep your brushes wet and look for eye stoppers.

As we travel back and forth to the hospital almost every week I see old houses and barns. The parts I see began to take hold in my minds eye and viola!

The barn in this picture is lots of bits and pieces of other barns I've seen around. A neat topper, the silo, and an open door to look inside.  Painted on my sketch book with a travel paint set.

I look for "found time" so I can Grab and Idea. Found time is the fifteen minutes of waiting for someone at the store or the doctors office. It is the hour when everyone went to the store or grandmas house and you had to stay and work on something in the kitchen. Once you finished use the time left to Grab and Idea and draw or paint a bit.

Well time to get the brushes wet and paint on.

My Grandfather Archie made three legged stools by the dozen. If the leg's not set right you tip over. Our Art can be like the leg's on a stool.

One leg is the Paint and canvas or other material of our project. You need to understand how the paint or drawing material work together. What the paint in relation to the canvas is or to the painting.

The second leg is place or studio. Yes even the kitchen table or back bedroom can be your studio. The place of your creation can be hectic or peaceful. Some people need the busy and messy where others need everything clean and neat. I like a place with my radio where I can listen to the oldies and paint away.

Now the third leg is doing and creation. We so often have the biggest problem here. Creation, what or where, how much and what kind. That is why many artist take pictures and file them as a "morgue" or art file. Then you can say I want to look at rock or ducks or mountains. It is having the back ground and the time as well as the files to do the actual creations.

Well kids get out your stools and paint away, Keep your brushes wet.

Artist have got up before sunrise for years just to capture the sun's glory. The light is different, the sky is cleaner, and the earth is fresh again.

Sun Set also brings its own set of color and cloud formations, with shadows and reflections.

Go outside and look up and around. Get a feel for what the world looks like.

The hardest part of all the looking and checking out the sky and sunrise is now I have to try to get it on canvas. I think the more you paint and sketch you get a feel of what works for you and how to lay it down. Keep painting and drawing.

Get the brushes wet and sunglasses out!

I feel we always paint and draw from the "Front Side" if you know what I mean. You see a flower and if you draw it you look to the best or front for your sketch.

Trees are the same, animals, and people too for that matter. Always face front. Well today in the Doctors office they had a picture of a flower from the back with a bird on it. It was stunning. Something different  and that is what makes art.

Find some thing different. This parking Island is something different. But it was a live subject as I waited on my wife to finish shopping and it kept me busy for a while.

So lets look at the other side and keep our brushes wet!
