American Women Painters

There were ladies in the 1880's that saw what the men were doing and decided to paint as well as they did. This is Mary Cassatt, who's father was very rich and moved the family from the east coast of the U.S. to Paris.

She began to study with all of the Impressionist including Manet (not Monet) and he had a crush on her and the other lady, Berthe Morisot who married Manet's brother. Crazy group, but some of their paintings are amazing!

I see this one in the Hobby Lobby and Target stores as prints and people use them as Fine Art and are in the girls rooms and in their house.

I see this painting as a story of love and care. The colors and composition is sweet. The little girl is learning how to take care of herself as well feeling mothers love.

Notice the large pitcher in front of everything and how it leads you into the painting. We look at the two people first then the bowl, I would consider this an "S" or "Z" composition.

Well so ends the lesson for today. Keep your brushes wet and pencil sharp!
