Light expands, Dark comes forward

Leonardo said, "Light expands."

But the dark comes forward.
In painting these truths are rules every painter has broken, then fixed.

Painting is the illusion to make a flat or 1-D drawing into a 2-D or 3-D visual. The years have pasted and we just now understand all these things. In the Dark Ages painting was flat. Then in the Renaissance we discovered the shadowing and began to make subjects look 2-D.

Finding light and dark together we see and our eye pulls the light up and out. The dark come toward us and gets bigger, this makes painting look more real.

Keep your brushes wet and leave the light on.
