Light and Dark and Middle Tones

Monet and the Impressionist saw, either through perception or understanding of a new concept, of light and dark plus middle tones define shape and picture.

Almost all painting and drawings are those three things. Light will define the size of the shape. Dark will describe the shape. Middle tones give the shadows and light some where to go.

This copy of Monet's garden in Giverny shows the middle tones of the green leaves, the dark is the far mountains and near grasses, and of course the light is the sky and other bright lights.

Light and dark plus the middle tones will always make your picture better. Today look for the things in middle tones grays, and browns and many other colors.

Okay let get out the brushes and dip in and get them wet!
