The Teeter Totter Effect

This is a picture of a summer sunflower. The leaves lean toward left. The head of the flower is so big it feels like you are on a teeter totter leaning toward the right.

The balance of painting is a strange thing, one can make a subject lean or move to one side or the other yet it will hold your interest. This flower is mostly straight up and down.

To me it feels as if the left hand leaves are just to big, even the flowers is super large.

But when I look at this picture as a whole I think it holds together.
Balance is everything in your painting, but some times you must break the rules to make a good painting. Knowing when and how is the mark of a master painter.

OK get the teeter totter out and keep your brushes wet!
