Canvas, Paper, and Substrate!

Artist need something to paint on from cave walls to people (yes people) we paint on anything.

Canvas was after boards and Masonite. The Dutch and French came up with sail cloth and some crazy artist said, "You know I could paint on that."

Early 13th century painters came up with a formula to smooth the ruff texture of the "duck" canvas.  I know they used silk and linen as well but the the sail cloth duck was so well used because they could make a glue and smooth covering to let the paint slide over the paint that no thread would show through. ( Duck or in the Dutch Doek ) I was a long process. covering and then sanding and smoothing the painting for the next step.

Oil was so caustic it would eat the canvas unless it was primed with some form of coating. Now we use gesso or acrylics almost anything to kill the white of the new canvases.

Well this is going to be a two part or more post ...enjoy kids!
