Put a Cap on it!

Today I want to talk about capping. Or putting a cap on the clouds. By painting the darker background sky and then adding the lighter fluffy clouds you create the look of the sky. Then add light to the cloud and you have your cap!

I have painted this scene several times to achieve the scope of the thunder storm coming and the drama of the noon day sky.  Using white and yellow with a touch of orange to accent the cloud formation. After this is painted then you can touch the edge, in this case on the right side with the light coming in. By capping or touching the edge of your cloud then you under stand the drama or light for more interest. The Clouds dictate the shadows on the grasses and sand underneath the sky frame.

By blending the two elements of the sky with the clouds capped, and the earth with the shadows and dramatic lighting. Your painting takes on more excitement. This I think is your ultimate goal in painting a project anyway.

Keep your clouds capped and your brushes wet!
